Mix-minus explained for live production

A mix-minus is a mix that contains every source except one - usually the one you send it to. A remote commentator needs the program and the other commentator, but not themselves, or the link delay becomes an echo.

When you need it

Any two-way link: a remote guest over IP, a commentator at another site, any return line where the same party both listens and talks.

The principle

• Build the main program mix.
• For each person you feed, subtract their own channel.
• The result is program-minus-that-person.

The common mistake

Sending full program back to the guest. Always test with the real line delay, not locally.
